Writer, artist, poetry film maker and educator
I make dream-inspired artwork to explore the psychic charge of a dream. I draw quick sketches and jot dream recounts in a journal, and sometimes out of these entries emerges poetry and illustrations. If I am drawn to continue exploring the symbols I record the poems and film the images and other content, to create poetry films. By making these artworks or short mixed media films, I am re- entering the psychic charge of dream, and through creating the artwork, I access insights into current issues, past hauntings and future possibilities. I make micro poetry and micro poetry films - not as therapy, not for interpretation. I make them to engage with the powerful dream images which resonate with me in the days, months or years since I dreamt them.

Why Dreams?
I was broke, turning 40 and going through a divorce when I had a series of dreams. First I dreamt of a an old living room, with water pouring down the peeling wallpaper, soaking into a moldy couch and threadbare carpet. In the second dream, I was walking through a scorched and blackened shell of a house, burnt to cinders in a raging fire. The third dream, I opened the front door of a tiny cottage to find a vaulted ceiling and sweeping staircase. I opened a french door and walked into a beautiful, light-filled room. Opening door after door, the interiors led me to new sections of the house you couldn't sense from the outside. These images gave me a sense of where I was in the cycle of life I was living through. Not as therapy. Not as something to interpret. Just a deep engagement and embodiment with the dream symbols and an awareness that they often appeared strongly when my my life was moving through a threshold space, as I journeyed through the life-death-rebirth cycle of life. I made a Pinterest board of the house interiors, used the images as screen savers. Then I started drawing the images from the dreams that stayed with me. Sometimes I jotted some poetry and added it to a short iPhone clip. Soon, I was making micro poetry films - not as therapy, not to interpret them - just engaging in the powerful dream images that resonated with me in the days, months or years since I dreamt them. |
Acts of Dream Creativity
Ten years ago, when I was on the verge of stepping out of a comfort zone, I woke up distressed about dreamt of a little boat tempest-tossed on the ocean. I drew the boat, and in my drawing I gave it oars and sail, to help navigate its way through the storm. The image became my screen shot, reminding me that I can navigate large oceans in my waking world and the power of dream symbols in our waking world. Later I dreamt of a mermaid who was caught in a glass jar, and the little girl who rescued her and returned her to the sea. I drew the images, wrote poetry and soon, these images combined into a short poetry film, Liminal.
The dream images are my wayfarers - guiding me through the life-death-regeneration cycles of my life.
